How To Find Inspiration
Years ago, I was writing music for a slide show of the life of a great western saint, St Francis. My problem was that the stanzas of his most famous poem were so irregular that one line might have five syllables, and another might have twenty five. For years I was thwarted by this difficulty. Yet now I needed a melody for that poem. I strongly visualized St Francis as it is said he first sang it to his chief woman disciple and a brother monk. Legend tells us that he had risen from his death bed and was leaning against a tree, blind and ill, but triumphant in the joy he felt in his love for God.
When the image came clearly to my mind, I offered it up in prayer and asked to hear St Francis singing that song. To my great joy, the melody came to me instantly. It was one that could be expanded or contracted to fit every stanza. And it expressed, at least to my satisfaction, the power and beauty of the words. How is it possible to receive inspiration from a higher source when we need it?
Inspiration should be awaited in the heart, then held up to the spiritual eye in the forehead where, my Guru said, we can commune with the divine. A cycle of energy is formed thereby, uniting the two. Inspiration of this kind is already, in itself, a form of meditation. For it deepens our attunement with the higher self.
Of the heart, ask love. Of the spiritual eye, ask wisdom. Ask that what you create be in tune with both love and truth. Never allow yourself to express anything that you don’t really feel in your deepest self to be true. To do less is to prostitute your talent.
Remember also that it is not enough to receive the initial inspiration for creative work. The mind wants to say, “So much for inspiration! Now let me concentrate on the work. “But inspiration is not a motionless tableau - it is vibration; it is living. You must keep your heart dancing in it, if you would infuse into your entire work its creative influence.
